Question

How much data traffic does TomTom Traffic generate?

Answer

The following calculation of average data usage is based on these assumptions:
  • TomTom Traffic is enabled during morning and afternoon rush hours each working day.
  • Traffic information is retrieved at least every 5 minutes.
  • You travel in or near a major city.
  • Your navigation device is using the map of Western Europe.
France Germany Netherlands UK Western Europe

The information that is exchanged between the Traffic server and your device is minimised through compression and smart filtering algorithms, so that communication costs are minimal.

The amount of data that is exchanged depends on:
  • Frequency of use
Every time you request a traffic update, new data will be exchanged if available.
  • Time of day
During rush hour there are more incidents meaning more data than at night or midday.
Map used on your navigation device
A larger map means more data. Long term traffic incidents are downloaded once and kept up to date for the entire map. Short term incidents are downloaded for your area only.
