Question

Which memory card should I buy for additional maps?

Answer

If you need to install an additional map on a new memory card, we advise that you choose a memory card with enough memory to store your maps and any additional information such as applications, voice files, points of interest, etc.

Note: The performance of your TomTom device depends on various factors:

  • Make sure you have the latest application version installed.
  • Try reducing the amount of selected Points of Interest (POI) to see if that improves performance.
  • A memory card with a higher read speed may improve performance.

What size memory card do I need?

  1. Check the size of the map you want to install.

    • Before purchasing:
Go to the TomTom Webshop and select the map you want to buy. The size of the map is listed under Your selection.

    • After downloading:
In TomTom HOME, click Add Traffic, Voices, Safety Cameras etc. > Items on my computer to check the size of your map.

  2. Reserve space for the TomTom application, voice files, points of interest, etc.
We advise that you reserve at least 30 MB.

  3. Bear in mind that the available size on a memory card is less than the size mentioned on the card.
Example: A 1 GB memory card usually has about 970 MB available space.

The size of internal memory depends on the preinstalled map. To check the exact size of internal memory connect your device to TomTom HOME and then click Manage my device. Then select the Items on device tab.

**  Carminat TomTom: We recommend that you only use original Carminat TomTom SD cards. They are optimised for best reliability and performance in your navigation device. If you do use other SD cards make frequent updates.

Read speed
We recommend that you buy a memory card with the highest available read speed.

Note: Some manufacturers express the speed in x 150 bytes/sec
  Example: “50 X” is equivalent to 7.5 MB/sec

Formatting
When you buy a new memory card you don't need to format it before installing maps. New memory cards are formatted to FAT 32 by default, which is the correct format for use in TomTom navigation devices.
